Module III. Reconciliation and Trauma-Care in Conflict-Affected Countries

1.Lesson Focus

Perceiving both reconciliation and trauma care in conflict-affected countries as one of peacebuilding activities, the purpose of this module is to acquire basic understanding and practical methodology of psychological care.

2.Targeted Goals

  • Acquire basic understanding of psychological trauma
  • Understand a transition from trauma care to reconciliation
  • Acquire basic, practical methodology of trauma care

3.Components and Details of Each Unit

  • Unit 1: Trauma and its effects
  • Unit 2: A transition from trauma care to reconciliation
  • Unit 3: Practical methodology of reconciliation and trauma care

(1)Unit 1
The aim of the Unit 1 is to obtain basic understanding about practical methodology to address issue of trauma. The module will first cover basic characteristics of trauma in order to understand what it is, and then covers basic understanding about symptoms. Module will conclude with learning about characteristics of trauma that is unique to war-affected countries.

(2)Unit 2
Focusing on the issue of trauma in war-affected countries, this unit will provide overview of the methodology to address the issue of trauma. In that process, this unit will emphasize the importance of trauma care initiatives led by local communities. The unit will also introduce cases where trauma care attempts were linked to the issue of reconciliation.

<Targeted Goals>
  • Deepen understanding about the way trauma care ought to be in war-affected countries from a perspective of peacebuilding
  • Obtain understanding about methodologies of trauma care that can be implemented at the community-level from a perspective of peacebuilding
  • Obtain understanding about cases where trauma care were linked to the issue of reconciliation

(3)Unit 3
This unit is designed to acquire understandings about practical methodologies of linking trauma care and reconciliation for those with different backgrounds who may be required to handle these issues in conducting daily works (i.e. school, public administration, etc). The unit will introduce stress management, workshops on self-understanding, workshop on understanding others, art therapy, and community empowerment. Utilizing the basic understanding of trauma care acquired from the first two units, participants are expected to acquire capacities to make policy proposals and/or to address the issue of trauma in his/her country.

<Targeted Goals>
 Utilizing the Unit 1 and 2, participants are expected to be able to make policy proposal, analysis, and evaluation on trauma care-related activities.
